"Detroit duo Johnstonsons — John River and Stonny Moon, lifelong friends operating under a band name that reads like a Lynchian fake ID — have spent three years figuring out which version of themselves they actually wanted to make a record as. The name sounds more like a CB handle or a landscaping company than a synth-pop band, which is exactly what lets the actual record sneak up on you. Their debut LP for à La Carte Records, ""Hard II Impersonate,"" makes the gap between expectation and execution into part of the pleasure — by the first chorus, what the band is called stops mattering and what they sound like takes over.

River and Moon got two full records' worth of material into this album before tearing both up — twice — when the songs landed too close to what someone else might make.
