Allen Ginsberg (1926–1997) was one of the most influential poets and cultural figures of the 20th century, best known as a leading voice of the Beat Generation. Born in Newark, New Jersey, Ginsberg emerged in the 1950s alongside writers such as Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, helping redefine American literature through spontaneous expression, spiritual inquiry, political dissent, and personal candor.

His landmark poem Howl and Other Poems, first published in 1956, became a defining work of postwar American poetry. Celebrated for its raw emotional power, long rhythmic lines, and uncompromising critique of modern society, Howl also became the center of a historic obscenity trial that helped expand free speech protections in the United States.

Across a career spanning four decades, Ginsberg explored themes of identity, sexuality, spirituality, war, and social justice through poetry, performance, photography, and recorded spoken word. Deeply influenced by jazz, Buddhism, and the writings of Walt Whitman and William Blake, he developed a distinctive style that merged lyrical intensity with conversational openness.

Ginsberg remained an active public figure throughout his life, advocating for peace, artistic freedom, and human rights. His work continues to shape contemporary poetry, music, and countercultural art, securing his place as one of America’s most enduring literary voices.
